The Whangie Hike...

Yesterday, some Cubs went for a winter hike up Auchineden Hill and through The Whangie... it's a beautiful place for views when the weather's right... this one's from a week ago...

...but as luck would have it yesterday it was wet, wet, (cold and) wet... what is it about Cubs and mud?

Fortunately, the guys and their parents had all paid close attention to the advice, so they were well prepared with plenty of warm clothes and waterproofs!

On the way, the guys learnt about how to "set the map", the 8 points on the compass, how to take and use compass bearings, how to navigate using features on the ground, and how GPS can be used to help with navigation. Some of the lads showed they knew about 4 and 6 figure grid references too. So they've now only got a few things to do before they've earned their
Map Reader Badge.

Despite the cold, they were all still smiling, and they all thought they'd do it again another day!

CO, RB and AS have now completed the requirements for their Adventure Badge. The other guy's can complete earning this one in the New Year.

Everyone who took part has earned their
Hikes Away 1 Badge... this is one of the Staged Activity Badges. As you complete more hikes (or other expeditions), you can earn the next level of badge.

A big thank you goes to AS's dad for helping with this activity... and to GD & RM's dads for offering to help if needed... your help makes these trips possible! Well done to all the kids for completing this adventure!

Well done to all who took part. Anyone can climb a hill on a warm summer day but it takes courage and determination to do it in the cold and (very) wet.
