Today 7 of our lads tackled an 18 mile muddy (and wet!) bike ride...
We cycled from Summerston to Birdston.
The guys started working towards their Cyclist Badge. If any of you want to finish earning the badge, make sure you check out what else you have to do... you can get your parents to confirm that you cleaned and oiled your own bike after the ride... this will help you earn the badge.
Initially, we wondered if we would ever get away... there were a few "technical hitches"... However, one replacement bike, one repaired puncture, and a shower of rain later... and we were off!
We were very lucky weather wise... we only got rained on properly a few times all day, although the wind was fierce on the way home.
There had been plenty of rain overnight though, so there was enough mud for everyone, and there were plenty of big puddles!!
We reached Graham's garage in time for lunch... we had sausages and chocolate bananas cooked on the BBQ, then the lads made themselves hot chocolate on a meths burner and a camping gas stove... they're now working towards their Adventure Badge.
It was a bit cold in the garage, and as you can see, the Cubs had fun washing their hands in hot water!
Throughout the day, there were a few guys who kept the lead... here they are enjoying a rest while they waited for "the rest"!
At the end there were lots of tired kids, and heaps of clothes (and bikes) to be washed...
I think you all did really well to complete the ride, and I was very impressed with your behaviour and manners all day. A big well done to all of you.
Finally, a big thank you is due to Stuart (RB's dad), who offered to help out... this was really appreciated by me, Graham, and the kids! Thanks!
Update (09/12/07)... it turns out that taking part in this event met the requirements for a "Hikes Away" staged activity badge (even though we didn't hike - it says Scouts could qualify by cycling 20km... you Cubs cycled 29km!!)... so you'll all be presented with one of these badges in the New Year... well done!
